The Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) intends to grow 84,000 trees every month in Kericho County for the next six months.
The Corporation regional manager Eng. Gideon Gitonga said in efforts to grow 15 billion trees in the country in the next 10 years, they will be planting 6000 trees every week in Kericho in a bid to plant over 500,000 trees by the end of the year.
Gitonga who said they had adopted Tulot forest in Londiani as part of the key area to plant trees, adding that with the help of expertise from Kenya Forest Service (KFS) they are not only growing the trees, but also ensuring that the seedlings survive and grow.
Gitonga stated this during a meeting of department heads in Kericho, chaired by the area County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo.
Kitiyo challenged all the departmental heads in the County to appraise themselves on their tree growing targets in the County to ensure that they meet the targets by growing the trees mostly with the guidance from the KFS officers.
Meanwhile, the County Director of education (CDE) Julius Ngoneshi has said that his ministry targets to plant 200 million trees countrywide, where every pupil is expected to grow 4 trees each, while every teacher is expected to grow 30 trees.
He added that all the information on tree growing will be captured and reported using a reporting tool online.
