All learning institutions in Kisumu East Sub-County successfully reopened for the second term of the academic calendar, despite the broader region being disrupted by floods.
The smooth transition to term two in the Sub-County was due to the area not being affected by the recent floods that adversely hit Kisumu Central, Kadibo, Muhoroni, and Nyando sub-counties submerging schools and destroying learning infrastructure.
Kisumu East Sub-County Education Director, Eunice Atieno, confirmed that all schools, colleges and tertiary education centres in her area were safe and remained unaffected by the floodwaters.
“Despite the severe weather conditions and widespread damage in surrounding regions, all students in Kisumu East Sub-County have reported back to school for the current term,” she confirmed during an interview with KNA on Tuesday.
The Director noted that the academic programmes and co-curricular activities are progressing as planned.
However, Atieno pointed out that the Ministry of Education needs to intervene to support academic institutions where the deluge has severely interrupted learning.
She noted the challenges and hardships faced by flood victims, adding that it directly impacts the education sector and has a bearing on students’ performance.
She emphasised the need for stakeholders to enhance the resilience of the education sector to ensure security and uninterrupted academic activities, thereby preventing future floods or other disasters from causing disruptions.
