Serving teachers must have representatives as commissioners in TSC, Orengo said.

Siaya governor, James Orengo wants serving teachers to have representatives within the teacher’s service commission to champion their rights.

According to Orengo, TSC as a constitutional body needs to emulate what other commissions such as the judiciary are doing by having at least one commissioner representing those in active employment or service.

He gave an example of the Judicial Service commission that has one slot for serving lawyers who elect their representative to sit in the commission to represent their interests or even the Parliamentary service commission where sitting MPs have representatives.

Orengo, a senior counsel, was speaking at the Siaya institute of technology today while addressing the Kenya Primary School Head teachers Association (KEPSHA) members from Nyanza during the region’s annual general meeting.

The governor challenged teachers to continue fighting for a slot in the TSC, adding that with their numbers and support from Kenyans, they will have to be listened to.

“Never give up until there is no retired teacher, but a teacher in service sitting in the commission otherwise, wataendelea kusema hakuna pesa” he said adding that the teaching fraternity was a powerful force that cannot be ignored.

Orengo called for the empowerment of teachers as a strategy to lift the rural economy, adding in most cases, the teachers are forced to dig into their pockets to come to the aid of starving learners.

He said that as part of empowering teachers, the county government of Siaya has, during the current financial year, converted over 600 early childhood development teachers into permanent and pensionable.

The governor further said that his government was also undertaking the establishment of model ECD centres across the six sub counties to the tune of Sh. 30 million.
