In a two and a half year trial, A Busia court has slapped a terror suspect with a 30 year prison sentence for involvement with terror groups and conspiracy to commit terror activities in the country.
The case which took shape in December 18,2021 saw Jackton Jacob Kanoti alias Abdul Hakim arrested in Siaya township where he was tracked down by sleuths due to his involved dealings with Al-Shabaab and Al-Queeda terror groups.
A DCI statement reveals that at the time of his arrest, Jackton was also found in possession on incriminating materials suspected to aid terror activities.
Mobile phones were also recovered through which he accessed terrorism-related information via videos and chats from various telegram groups.
The court established that the evidence presented before it by the prosecution was i deed satisfactory and convincing enough to execute the conviction leading to a 30 year prison sentence.
According to Kenya’s terrorism Act, a person who, being a member of a terrorist group, directs or instructs any person to commit a terrorist act commits an offence and is liable, on conviction, to imprisonment for life.
Furthermore, Section 58 makes it an offence to collect or make a record of information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, or to possess a document or record containing information of that kind. The maximum sentence in respect of s58 is 15 years’ imprisonment.
