Two university student leaders abducted during protests found – LSK

By Patricia Mollyne Mataga

Two university student leaders who were reportedly abducted by police ahead of Thursday’s anti-government protests have been found.

Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo on Friday, June 28, 2024, said the two – Joshua Okayo and Regis Wanjala were found dumped at unknown locations.

According to the LSK boss, Okayo was dumped in Murang’a while Wanjala was found in Ruiru.

The reason behind their abductions remain unknown.

However, it is suspected to be due to their role in the Gen Z protests that pushed for the total rejection of the controversial 2024 Finance Bill.

“We have confirmation that two comrades have been dumped at unknown locations after their abductions. Joshua Okayo @okayojoshua was dumped somewhere in Murang’a after being abducted in Rongai on Wednesday,” said the LSK President in part of a post on X.

“Regis Wanjala who was abducted on the same day was also found dumped in a tea plantation in Ruiru,” she added.

While the two have been found alive, Odhiambo noted that they have been admitted in hospital receiving medical attention.

She further said they are still shaken after the experience in the hands of the abductors suspected to be police officers.

The LSK President said they will ensure justice for the two student leaders.

“The two are safe but currently receiving medical attention and are still shaken up from the ordeal. We shall find recourse for these unfortunate actions of police,” she said.

Since the protests began two weeks ago, there has been a number of abductions reported.

Those abducted have however been released later with most of them reluctant to share their experience.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday claimed the abductions were orchestrated by National Police Service and National Intelligence Service (NIS) officers.

However, President William Ruto insisted none of the youths were abducted by government security operatives.
