Nyeri County Assembly has approved a motion seeking for enforcement of National and County Legislations governing the Public Road Transport Sector.
Regulations to maintain law and order by streamlining road user’s operations will help control traffic and prevent obstruction in public places and public roads among other areas.
In a motion moved by Agnes Wachira (Gender representative), the Member urged the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Transport to submit to the County Assembly for approval, Regulations on Matatu Termini for subsequent enforcement.
Wachira also urged the Executive to facilitate a sensitization programme with Public Transport stakeholders on the importance of adhering to the Public Road Transport and Road Use Regulations and on the impact of non-compliance.
In a sitting chaired by the Speaker James Gichuhi, the members supported the motion saying this would bring sanity to the roads considering that matatu drivers have been picking up and dropping off passengers along prohibited areas oblivious of the laws and regulations governing road use and Public Road Transport, thereby putting other road users and pedestrians at risk.
The motion comes amid the county having witnessed many road accidents leading to loss of lives and injuries.
