The Turkana County Department of Agriculture is set to assist farmers within irrigation schemes and various Agri-Nutrition farms affected by floods in Turkana East and Turkana South.

The County Director of Agriculture, Mr Aaron Nanok gave the assurance after a two-day assessment of irrigation farms and Agri-Nutrition plots in Katilu, Morulem, and Lotubae where he witnessed how floods destroyed existing crops and water control channels in the farms.

“Our most immediate response right now is the mitigation of further losses as we devise long-term measures to restore the affected farms to their full potential,” Director Nanok said.

He added that the information gathered would also serve as the basis for further responses by the County Government and partners moving forward.

“Our assessment has identified the affected farmers, the nature and extent of damage caused, and the most probable response to address the challenges,” Director Nanok stated.

The assessment was part of the efforts by the County Government to determine the impacts of the ongoing floods in agriculture and inform response measures, such as distributing seeds to the beneficiaries of flood emergency, unlocking the canal systems, and helping reinstate the damaged farms and schemes as well as providing immediate markets for production.

The other team members include Deputy Director of Agriculture, Emmanuel Essau, and Crop Officer Gabriel Okata.
