Turkana County Directorate of Veterinary Services in collaboration with the Kenya Women Veterinary Association (KWVA) has completed a three-day comprehensive mass vaccination and deworming campaign for dogs, cats and donkeys.

The initiative dubbed ‘Kick Rabies and Hydatidosis out of Turkana’ also entailed castration for dogs and cats in Kalokol, Kakuma and Nanam areas of the County.

The exercise which was launched by Ag. Chief Officer for Livestock Development Evans Lomodei (Fisheries and Aquaculture CCO) saw a total of 225 dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies, 66 castrations, 79 blood and fecal samples collected for laboratory testing and 44 donkeys attended.

In addition to vaccination efforts, the team also conducted public awareness and sensitization of communities on rabies and hydatidosis which were among the common zoonotic diseases in the target areas.

In line with the Governor’s agenda on strategic partnerships, the Department has been conducting annual intervention and the exercise is now at its third year of implementation in Turkana County.

Other strategic partners who supported the exercise were Brooke East Africa, World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), Ultravetis Ltd and Agency for Pastoralists Development (APAD).
