The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed Mokaya Frida Boyani, the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary for a five-year term.
Mokaya was among the seven candidates shortlisted by the Commission for the position of the Chief Registrar who were interviewed on Monday 18th March 2024, a position that had attracted at least 43 applicants.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms, the Chairperson of JSC, Martha Koome said Mokaya was appointed following deliberation and careful consideration of the candidates based on merit, performance and suitability for the position,“Mokaya who has over 27 years’ experience in the legal profession. Prior to her appointment she has been serving as the Registrar, Judicial Service Commission since 2012,” said Koome.
Chief Justice Koome said the new Chief Registrar joined the Judiciary in 1997 and served as a District Magistrate II(Prof), Resident Magistrate, Senior Resident Magistrate, Principal Magistrate and Senior Principal Magistrate.Mokaya stated that as a Chief Registrar, she envisions her role as one of actively catalyzing the constitutional and popular mandate, as reflected in the agenda of the Chief Justice, to build a Judiciary that is accountable, efficient, effective, independent, interdependent, trustworthy and authoritative.
She said her flagship priority will be to support the Chief Justice in delivering on the Social Transformation through Access to Justice agenda, especially its innovative people-centred justice model, unlocking the potential that the Judiciary Fund represents, doing better on how our Judiciary manages its resources including staff and assets.
“I will also support the properly systematizing of our judicial policy to results cycle and aligning the institutional management with this policy to results cycle in a way that clarifies roles and division of labour across the Judiciary.”She said.
Mokaya holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. She is also a Certified Public Secretary (CPS-K).
