A family in the village of Kokwongoi, Lelan ward Marakwet West sub-county is reeling from a devastating landslide that caused extensive damage to their one-and-a-half-acre farm.

The family is estimating huge losses due to the incident without reported casualties. Thus, “this is a shocking situation for us,” expressed John Chelal, the affected farmer stated that, the statement indicates a substantial financial loss due to the already planted crops on the farm.

Hence, the family has been facing continuous challenges due to the scarcity and high cost of fertilizers during planting season, thus, the washed-away crops was a result of the situation.

Paul Kanda, the Agricultural Officer overseeing Lelan Ward, recommended planting trees in the affected area to prevent further erosion and landslides. He also advocated for the closure of the area to prevent animals from accessing the land, which could exacerbate the situation.

The local AIC Bishop, Dr. David Kipsoi, attributed the landslide to human activities, echoing concerns about similar incidents of floods and landslides across the country. “We cannot live heedlessly,” he urged, emphasizing the importance of adhering to regulations to prevent such disasters.
