At least 12,000 learners from both Primary and Secondary schools in Busia have been affected by the ongoing floods that are ravaging many parts of the country.
The County Director of Education James Ekaliyo speaking to the press in his office Monday, said the most affected schools are from Bunyala and Teso North Sub counties.
“The schools that are completely inaccessible in Bunyala Sub county are Maduwa, Namabusi and Bulwani Primary schools,” said Elikayo, adding that those whose classrooms and sanitation facilities have been destroyed include Maduwa, Bulwani, Budala, Runyu, Musoma, Mukoma, Lunyofu, Bukoma Secondary and Namabusi.
He added that Teso North Sub County is not heavily affected with only a few schools having their water and sanitation facilities destroyed.
“The affected Primary schools in the area include Amoni, Kahijo, Akudiet, Kabukui, and Kajei,” he said, adding that Kamolo Secondary and Kolanya girls have had their toilets and water source destroyed respectively.
The Director further said that Mukoma primary and Mukoma Secondary, Lunyofu and Runyu in Bunyala Sub County are being used as temporary camps for the flood victims.
“We have already talked to UNICEF and they are organizing to provide tents,” he said, adding that Boards of Management in the affected schools are meeting so that they can reorganize the schools before learners are open.
At the same time, the Director stated that learners at Bulwani will be hosted in Osieko Primary school in case the floods do not subside.
Last week, President Dr. William Ruto directed that re-opening of schools be postponed indefinitely following the heavy rains pounding most parts of the country.
