MP Kaluma to Gen Z: Retreat and pick on new issues to advance

By Patricia Mollyne Mataga

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has asked young Kenyans to pick new issues to advance.

Kaluma argues that the youths, mostly Gen Z and Millenials have won in the bid to ensure the contentious 2024 Finance Bill does not see the light of the day.

In a post on his verified X handle, the ODM legislator said with the latest win, Gen Z should now look for another issue to advance.

He noted that there are many issues that need to be addressed which the youthful generation can push.

One of the issues that needs to be addressed, according to Kaluma, is corruption in government.

“The President has climbed down. The Finance Bill, 2024 has been withdrawn. Gen Z has won! May this great Generation retreat and pick on new issues to advance – and they’re many, like CORRUPTION IN GOVERNMENT,” the legislator said.

His sentiments come after President William Ruto agreed to withdraw the 2024 Finance Bill as the protesting youths have been demanding.

Ruto announced the withdrawal of the bill on Wednesday. He also sent out a memorandum to the National Assembly recommending the deletion of all the clauses in the bill.

Kenyans were angered by more tax proposals in the bill. They remained in the streets despite the government conceding to remove the controversial motor vehicle circulation tax, and increase of levies on financial transactions among others.

When announcing a decision to reject the Bill, the President said his administration would initiate a conversation with Kenyans on the way forward.

“I also propose that within the next 14 days, a multi-sectoral, multi-stakeholder engagement be held with a view to charting the way forward on matters relating to the content of the Bill as well as auxiliary issues raised in recent days on the need for austerity measures and strengthening our fight against corruption,” the President said.
