Murkomen issues new orders aimed at addressing road accidents

Transport, Roads and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has come out to issue new directives that seeks to address high road accidents that have been reported in the country.

Murkomen, in an update on his social media pages sought to address accidents within Nairobi area and its environs.

In a statement after meeting political leaders from Nairobi City County, the country the CS said relevant agencies had been directed to ensure the roads are well marked. This is part of an effort that Murkomen noted would help to curb the accidents.

But the CS also called on motorists to observe traffic rules.

“To avert cases of road crashes in Nairobi and it’s environs, I directed the Agencies involved to ensure all the busy roads in the County have clear markings and proper signage, and called on motorists and pedestrians to observe traffic rules when using the roads,” Murkomen said in a statement posted on his verified X handle.

The country has in the recent weeks witnessed a surge in road accidents.

Over 15 people have been killed in the accidents within the last two days.

Most of the accidents have been linked to drivers failing to adhere to traffic laws.

Data shared by the National Transport and Safety Authority last week indicated that this year along, 7,198 Kenyans have been involved in accidents out of which 1,189 died.

3,316 sustained serious injuries while 2,693 suffered from minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the Roads and Transport CS revealed that his ministry is working with Parliament and other development partners to speed up completion of pending road projects within the city.

He also noted that the government was working on fast tracking roll-out of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in an effort to decongest the City and enhance seamless movement of people within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area.
