Not one man, one shilling: Olekina reveals the only way to ensure equitable development

By Patricia Mollyne Mataga

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has come out to dismiss political leaders pushing for the implementation of the one man one shilin one vote formular in sharing of the national cake.

The push is being led by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and a host of Mount Kenya leaders.

However, according to Olekina, the formula is not a guarantee for equity to all parts of the country.

In a post on his verified X handle, the ODM legislator said using land size as a determiner is the only way the national cake will be equitably shared across the country.

“The only way to have equity in Kenya and for development to be spread across the Nation is for money to be divided based on land size! Not population,” said the Senator.

He further noted that with the current formula of sharing the revenue, at least half of the counties were being discriminated against.

“I disagree with one man one vote one shilling- 24 counties – the majority have been discriminated for way too long! I will never vote to deny any county money never!” said the Narok Senator.

The debate over the best formula to use in sharing revenue has been raging for years since the introduction of devolved systems of governance.

Proponents of the one man one shilling one vote formula argue that population should be the primary determiner.

“In matters of revenue sharing, I firmly believe in one-man-one-vote-one-shilling. It’s a straightforward concept: the more people there are in an area, and the more taxes they contribute, the more funding they deserve to receive,” Gachagua said.

On Thursday, opposition leader Raila Odinga declared his support for the proponents of the controversial formula.

He said; “It’s not a question of discrimination we want to ensure that each Kenyan gets an equal share of the available resources.”
