The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Sunday mounted a nationwide crackdown targeting all vehicles.

NTSA officials set up road safety checks in a bid to ensure all road-worthy vehicles are allowed to operate.

The crackdown came even as schools across the country are set to open for the second term starting Monday, May 13, 2024.

An update on the NTSA’s official social media pages indicates that a number of vehicles operating in the Public Service sector were nabbed for failing to adhere to the traffic rules.

A school bus was also among those caught in the crackdown.

“School transport like all Public Service Vehicles, must COMPLY with traffic rules and regulations.,” the authority said while sharing photos of the impounded school bus.

The school bus had a defective speed limiter as well as faded chevron and reflectors.

A number of Public Service Vehicles were also impounded.

“PSV impounded during the Road Safety Compliance check within Kisii County,” NTSA said, adding that the vehicle was found operating without a speed limiter, an inspection certificate and a Road Service Licence (RSL).

The road checks were conducted in among others Mombasa – Nairobi Highway, Narok – Nairobi Road, Sotik -Kisii Road and Kimilili – Chwele Road.

Random drunk driving tests were also conducted as part of the road safety compliance checks.

Meanwhile, the agency has advised parents and guardians t ensure the vehicles their children will be boarding meet all the safety standards.

“We appeal to parents and guardians to select safe and compliant vehicles to ferry children BACK to SCHOOL,” NTSA said, adding that “To verify the validity of licences issued to drivers, school transport vehicles and PSVs, we urge the public to use the FREE NTSA Mobile Application available on Google Play Store.”
