Raila visits ailing MP at a London hospital

By Peter Ochieng

Azimio La Umoja One Kenya leader, Raila Odinga has visited a Member of Parliament (MP) who is recuperating at a London hospital.

Odinga who doubles up as ODM Party leader checked on Awendo MP Walter Owino, who is recuperating after undergoing surgery.

“He is recuperating after surgery on his spine. We wish the legislator a quick recovery,” the Orange Party said in a post of social media.

Odinga left the country for the United Kingdom last week for a series of engagements, including delivering a keynote address at the University of Oxford where he was invited by the Oxford Africa Society.

“At the annual event, Mr. Odinga will deliver a lecture titled: Forging Africa’s Future: A Journey of Resilience and Renewal,” said his Spokesperson, Dennis Onyango in a statement to newsrooms.

“His address will feature key themes like political stability, economic growth, equity, democracy and social cohesion while highlighting stories of resilience and examples of renewal from across Africa,” added Onyango.

His trip to the UK also saw him drum up support for his bid to become the next African Union Commission (AUC) chairman.

The position falls vacant next year, when Chad’s Moussa Faki’s time in office comes to an end.
President William Ruto is among African leaders who has endorsed Raila’s bid.

He has assured Africans that continental affairs will be well taken care of, if Odinga lands the position, urging East Africans to fully back the former Prime Minister.

Speaking in February, 2024, he called on the members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) to fully back Odinga’s candidature.

“It is time for East Africa to head the Africa Union…it is good for our region and we have agreed as heads of state that we front only one candidate to the seat,” he said.
