Relief for Content Creators as Kenya Film Classification Board Revokes Directive on YouTube Licenses

By Jehoshaphat Kanyoro Njaro

In a significant move for digital content creators, the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has revoked a directive requiring YouTubers and other online content creators to obtain licenses before uploading their works.

The decision was announced by the KFCB Chairperson, Njogu wa Njoroge, who emphasized the Board’s commitment to supporting and encouraging content creators.

The initial notice, issued by Acting CEO Paskal Opiyo, had mandated that content creators acquire filming licenses from the KFCB for public exhibition, sale, or distribution of their audiovisual content.

The notice outlined the requirements under the Films and Stage Plays Act, including the need for all filmmakers producing content within Kenya to obtain a license and submit their works for examination and classification by the KFCB.

The directive had sparked concerns among content creators, who feared legal repercussions if they failed to comply within the 14-day period specified in the notice.

However, Njogu wa Njoroge’s recent announcement has brought much-needed relief to the digital community.”Our content creators should be supported all the way.

They should be encouraged and supported 100%,” Njoroge stated. He highlighted the importance of training youth on monetization, emphasizing the Board’s deliberate focus on this matter.

Njoroge directed the KFCB management to withdraw the notices and organize an engagement with all stakeholders to address their concerns comprehensively.

Njoroge further stressed the potential of the digital media sector to create thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of job opportunities.

He urged a collaborative approach to harnessing these opportunities, ensuring that content creators are not hindered by bureaucratic obstacles.

The KFCB’s decision marks a positive shift in policy, recognizing the vital role of content creators in the digital economy and the need to foster an environment conducive to their growth and success.
