Kisumu County Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has challenged the Kisumu County government to move with speed and institute a lasting solution to the perennial flooding in Muhoroni, Nyando and Nyakach in Kisunu.
Mrs. Odinga pointed that it was not right for the county government to continue sitting pretty in wait for the flood havoc to strike then purport to seek for short term remedies of controlling the floods.
“However, the county government ought to implement concrete disaster management plan and not knee jerk responses when the rains hit like distributing food aid and money at the height of the floods then sitting back to make merry once the floods subside because this is only reactive planning and not proper management of the situation. The government needs to first evaluate the flood cycle in the affected areas in order to institute lasting remedy,” she said.
The Women Rep made the remarks when she distributed food aid to the floods victims in Muhoroni.
“And we should not excuse ourselves because there is absolutely no reason to accuse leaders who point out what should be done instead of back biting or witch-hunting of other leaders.
Everyone must do their work and the county government must also be held responsible to ensure that that they lay the needed dykes and desilt the rivers including implementing all the necessary interventions.
The County Assemblies must stop being cheering squads and hold the respective county governments accountable and ensure all the departments within the county governments deliver on their mandates,” Odinga said.
