Nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege has hit out at some of the policies being implemented by the Kenya Kwanza government.
Chege, a Jubilee party legislator further claimed some of the government’s advisors are not competent enough.
Speaking on Thursday, June 6, 2024, the legislator also accused President William Ruto of not walking the talk as far as his ‘live within our means’ crusade is concerned.
She used the example of how former president the late Mwai Kibaki introduced austerity measures in his administration which played a key role in the country’s economic development.
“When President Kibaki took office, he said government vehicles could not be fuel guzzlers and opted for Passats. So, when you say you are implementing cost-cutting measures, don’t just say it. Let Kenyans see that it is true,” Sabina Chege said in a message directed at President Ruto.
The Jubilee MP further claimed the current government advisors are to blame for some of the policies hurting Kenyans.
“Let us have genuine advisors, not advisors who only advice based on books but in reality, end up hurting the same people who voted for you,” the nominated MP said.
Sabina Chege has in the past publicly declared her support for the government, despite the Jubilee Party which nominated her to be a member of the opposition’s Azimio One Kenya Coalition.
Her sentiments come at a time when there is a debate over some of the proposals contained in the 2024 Finance Bill.
Several tax proposals have been flagged by a number of stakeholders including the Kenya Bankers Association, the Kenya Association of Manufactures (KAM) and insurance players.
Among the controversial proposals include the introduction of a 16 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) on bread as well as a new Motor Vehicle tax.
MPs on Wednesday started debating the Finance Bill 2024 after the conclusion of the public participation phase.
