Ugunja NGCDF disburses bursary to over 1400 students

More than 5,000 students have benefitted from the Ugunja constituency bursary kitty during the current financial year, area NGCDF chairman, Benard Omollo Were has said.

According to Were, the kitty has so far spent Sh 41 million to facilitate the education of the bright but needy students in secondary schools as well as universities, tertiary colleges and vocational training institutions.

He was speaking outside the NGCDF offices in Ugunja town today while presiding over the disbursement of Sh13 million bursary to 1,449 students in universities, colleges and tertiary and vocational institutions.

In February this year, he said, the committee awarded 3941 secondary school students bursaries worth Sh28 million to enable them continue with education.

The bursary subcommittee chair, Milton Philip Ndaya said 83% of the 1742 applicants were successful, adding that applicants living with disability were all considered and awarded 100 % bursary.

Ndaya said that this was the highest amount that the Ugunja CDF had disbursed as bursary so far and attributed this to the increased funding.

Ugunja constituency manager, Aster Angolo who represented the area member of parliament, Opiyo Wandayi hailed the NGCDF committee for a job well done. Angolo said that the area member of parliament was committed to matters education.

He said that Wandayi’s commitment can be seen in the infrastructure development within the education sector in the area.

“This has seen Ugunja constituency do well in education and we shall ensure that we are on top of the map,” he said.

He appealed for continuous engagement amongst the stakeholders to help the constituency achieve more.

The registrar of the Ugunja vocational training college, Geoffrey Ayoyi and the Kenya Medical Training College, Siaya deputy principal, Christopher Onyango who received the cheques on behalf of their institutions hailed the Ugunja NGCDF for supporting the local institutions.
