UoN students threaten to storm VC’s office

By Patricia Mollyne Mataga

Trouble is looming at the University of Nairobi following reports that Vice Chancellor Stephen Kiama had rejected to go on terminal leave.

University’s Council was reported to have directed Prof Kiama to proceed to leave a few weeks ago pending end of his term.

However, reports indicate that the VC ignored the directive insisting that he will choose when to go on leave.

The matter has led to a standoff between him and the university council.

But as the differences rages on, students have now joined the debate.

Addressing a media briefing on Sunday, the UoN student leaders asked the VC to respect the council’s directive and go on leave.

They warned that should Prof Kiama step foot at his office, they will have no option but to storm into his office.

“If you have been given leave, kindly proceed and if you can’t proceed, and want to dare us, my friend let us meet tomorrow. We are going to that office,” said one of the student leaders.

“It is not a threat, it is a kind warning that comrades can understand,” he added.

There has been a push and pull between the VC and university council over his tenure.

The council has already picked Prof. Ayub Gitau Njoroge as Kiama’s replacement. However, the VC remains adamant that his term is not yet over.

Kiama was named UoN VC in 2020. His tenure has however been surrounded with a series of controversies and inflicts with the council.
