The Nakuru County Government has named a road after late former President Mzee Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi’s press secretary Lee Njiru.
Njiru announced his retirement from the civil service last week after serving for 46 years. The 72-year-old was honoured for his remarkable track record over the course of his career.
The Road was unveiled on the night of Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at the Nakuru Central Business District (CBD) in an event presided over by Nakuru County Deputy Governor Eric Korir.
The DG noted that the county government was honoured to immortalise Njiru for his ipressive service.
“Throughout his career in the presidency, Mr Njiru employed an impressive work ethic and integrity, which is a lesson to the young people who are starting out their careers,” Korir stated.
Njiru thanked Nakuru County Governor Lee Kinyanjui for the gesture, conceding that he was humbled with the recognition.
“I want to thank the leadership of Nakuru County for this great honour and recognition of my long service to the presidency,” Njiru said.
Nakuru County has continued to honour local heroes and heroines by naming roads after them. Last year, five roads were named in honour of veteran politician Koigi Wa Wamwere, first governor Kinuthia Mbugua, former MPs Alicien Chelaite and Willy Kibowen Komen.
The county has made an effort to construct more roads and name them after their local veterans. They also named a road after former first lady Lena Moi.
According to reports, Governor Kinyanjui has already constituted a committee that will engage members of the public on which roads should be named.
“We will continue to name our roads in honour of men and women from Nakuru County who have made an impact in the country,” DG Korir stated.
He added that roads that bear colonial named will also be renamed.
