Uhuru requested me to fight for interests of Mt. Kenya – Wamuchomba

By Peter Ochieng

Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has vowed to step up her fight for the interest of residents of Mt. Kenya region.

Speaking at the Limuru III meeting in Kiambu county on Friday, Wamuchomba said former President Uhuru Kenyatta requested her not to relent in the fight for residents of Mt. Kenya.

Ahead of the 2022 general elections, the legislature was among Central Kenya leaders who backed William Ruto’s presidential bid, while the retired President supported Azimio leader, Raila Odinga.

She said she has since made peace with the former Head of State, who urged her not to relent in the fight for the people of Mt. Kenya.

“I met Uhuru Kenyatta and sought forgiveness and he requested me to continue fighting for the interest of the region,” said the MP.

The vocal legislature seemingly fell out with Ruto’s administration, after voting against the Finance Bill, 2023, despite being elected on the ruling United Democtratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.

The fallout, she said has seen her being intimidated all over, but insisted that she will not stop fighting for the rights and interests of Kenya.

The meeting was attended by among others, embattled Jubilee party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni and Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua.

Karua called on President William Ruto to respect his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to the outspoken politician, Ruto should respect Kenyatta since he will also expect the same from his successor, when his time in office comes to an end.

The current President served as Kenyatta’s deputy for two terms from 2013 to 2022, but they are not in good terms after Kenyatta supported Odinga instead of his deputy.

Karua urged leaders and residents of Mt. Kenya to speak with one voice, ahead of the 2022 polls irrespective of their political party affiliations.

“We should not be divided because of politics, we should be each others brothers keepers,” she said.

She was Odinga’s running mate during the 2022 presidential contest. The race ended with defeat to the Ruto-Rigathi Gachagua combination.
